A 2-stage 10" × 4.5" short Big Blue whole-house filter built around a washable, reusable pleated sediment cartridge at Stage 1 rather than a disposable PP cartridge. The premise: cartridges that get rinsed clean and reinstalled cost dramatically less to run over a 5- to 10-year horizon than cartridges replaced every 6–12 months.
Why a Reusable Pleated Cartridge
A standard 10" × 4.5" PP sediment cartridge gets thrown away when it saturates — typically every 6–12 months. Over a decade that's 10–20 cartridges per filter housing, plus shipping cost and landfill waste.
A pleated washable cartridge holds up to repeated rinsing because its rigid pleated structure doesn't compress like loose-spun PP fibres do. When pressure drop signals it's loaded, you remove the cartridge, rinse it under a hose, and reinstall. No replacement to order, no waste to bin, no shipping interruption. The pleated media itself eventually wears out after several years of wash cycles, but the per-year running cost over that period is substantially lower than disposable.
For rural properties where filter delivery takes time and budget matters, or for owners prioritising landfill reduction, the washable approach makes financial and environmental sense.
Two-Stage Configuration
- Stage 1 — Washable pleated sediment cartridge: captures sediment, rinse-clean and reuse design
- Stage 2 — Carbon block: chlorine, taste, odour, organics — replaceable cartridge
The Stage 2 carbon block is not reusable — activated carbon adsorbs chlorine and chemicals permanently into its media, so it does need standard 6–12 month replacement. The washable economy comes from Stage 1.
