Why Flexible Connections at Pressure Tank Outlets

A pressure tank's connection point experiences three stresses that rigid pipe alone struggles with:

• Vibration from the pump cycling on and off, especially during startup transients
• Pressure cycling as the bladder fills, empties, and refills
• Thermal expansion and contraction with hot/cold cycles in heated installations

Rigid pipe transfers all of this stress directly into the tank's threaded port, leading over time to either pipe-side cracking or tank-port leakage. A flexible stainless steel hose absorbs the movement, decoupling the tank port from the rigid plumbing run.

This is the standard installation method on pressure tank inlets — almost every professional pump installer specifies a flexible hose at this connection.

Important Sizing Note

The 1/2-inch internal diameter sets the flow restriction — for low-to-moderate flow installations (typical residential pressure pumps at 20-40 L/min), this is well within the hose's flow capacity. For very high-flow installations beyond 60 L/min, factor in the inner-diameter restriction when sizing.
